I would say 2020 was not at all lost in terms of good releases. However, I noticed that few new bands risked releasing their debut albums amidst the chaos of this year. And isn’t it that, at 48 in the second half, I come across this pearl from Sweden?
With a few years since its formation, and still little known to the public, the band Ambassadors of the Sun has been receiving a great reception from the specialized media. And it’s not by chance. The sound brought in “Orbiting a Dead Star” is strong, melodious, complex, daring, creative and out of the ordinary. It’s even difficult to nail a style, as the band seems to move with category between Prog, Death, Melodic Death and Doom Metal.
The result is a dense, hard-to-understand record on the first listen. But if you pay enough attention to the sound of these guys, you’ll certainly enjoy it a lot. Overall, the album features long songs, which alternate introspective and calm passages with others of pure vibrancy and aggressiveness, with the vocals varying according to the mood of the moment. Once you get used to the Ambassadors way, the disc becomes immersive and holds you for its 52 minutes.
Among the tracks, I highlight “Disciple”, which opens the disc with its 9 minutes of great variation and rhythmic alternatives. My favorite, however, is “Cinnabon”, another long and varied track, with a very strong chorus. But as I said, it’s a record to listen to in its entirety and let yourself immerse yourself. Look at Ambassadors of the Sun!!!
